Escape by Carolyn Jessop
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I am a person that is a big fan of fringe religions. I love learning about cults, different beliefs, and things like this. Escape by Carolyn Jessop is sooo in my wheelhouse. I've watched TV shows and documentaries about polygamy before so I went into this book with a basic knowledge of the FLDS, but that is absolutely not necessary to enjoy this book. Jessop gives a great and thorough explanation of the structure, beliefs, and dynamics of the church. I learned a lot about the day-to-day life of members of the FLDS. I was riveted by some of the stories and the mental illness that seemed all too common.
That being said, this definitely is the most well-written memoir I've ever read. There was a lot of repetition and some parts moved pretty slowly. This is something I was able to overlook in order to hear more about the author's experience in this cult.
